Submental fullness, or what is more commonly referred to as a “double chin,” can cause anxiety and affect your self confidence in social and professional settings, not to mention photos! Not much can be done to shrink the fat that accumulates under the chin, which is often resistant to diet and exercise…until now!
Kybella is a unique injectable treatment that is made from the synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that works to break down dietary fat. It is injected under the chin, which works to gradually and permanently eliminate the excess fat cells. The best part is it’s permanent! Usually 3-4 sessions are needed to achieve that permanently slimmer and more refined profile. Additional benefits of Kybella, include easy treatment and customization according to your chin’s current condition and personal treatment goals.
Dr. Mueller is an advanced injector with Kybella and it may also be used on small stubborn troublesome areas on the body, such as the fat above the bra area. She has been a certified injector of Kybella for fat reduction since 2015.
Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that helps break down the fat in the body. The active ingredient in Kybella® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Fat cells are broken down each time Kybella® is injected into the treatment area beneath the chin. Over a period of time, those cells are cleared away through the natural processes of your body. You are left with a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin.
We will recommend the number of treatment sessions you may need to achieve your aesthetic goals. The injection process may take 15 to 20 minutes. Each treatment is at least 1 month apart.
Sometimes serious side effects can occur, including:
The most common side effects include: swelling, numbness, redness, pain, and areas of hardness. Swelling is an expected reaction to treatment, but generally becomes less severe with subsequent treatments.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Marginal Mandibular Nerve Injury : Cases of marginal mandibular nerve injury, manifested as an asymmetric smile or facial muscle weakness, were reported in 4% of subjects in the clinical trials; all cases resolved spontaneously (range 1-298 days, median 44 days). KYBELLA® should not be injected into or in close proximity to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve.
Dysphagia : Dysphagia occurred in 2% of subjects in the clinical trials in the setting of administration-site reactions, eg, pain, swelling, and induration of the submental area; all cases of dysphagia resolved spontaneously (range 1-81 days, median 3 days). Avoid use of KYBELLA® in patients with current or prior history of dysphagia as treatment may exacerbate the condition.
Injection-Site Hematoma/Bruising : In clinical trials, 72% of subjects treated with KYBELLA® experienced hematoma/bruising. KYBELLA® should be used with caution in patients with bleeding abnormalities or who are currently being treated with antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy as excessive bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur.
Risk of Injecting Into or in Proximity to Vulnerable Anatomic Structures: To avoid the potential of tissue damage, KYBELLA® should not be injected into or in close proximity (1 cm-1.5 cm) to salivary glands, lymph nodes, and muscles.
Injection Site Alopecia: Cases of injection site alopecia have been reported with administration of KYBELLA®. Onset and duration may vary among individuals and may persist. Consider withholding subsequent treatments until resolution.
Injection Site Ulceration and Necrosis: Injections that are too superficial into the dermis may result in skin ulceration and necrosis. Cases of injection site ulceration and necrosis have been reported with administration of KYBELLA®. Do not administer KYBELLA® into affected area until complete resolution.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
The most commonly reported adverse reactions in the pivotal clinical trials were: injection site edema/swelling, hematoma/bruising, pain, numbness, erythema, and induration.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Ice the area. Use a small bag of crushed ice to gently ice the area. Ice for 10 minutes on and 30 minutes off. Continue the icing for 48 hours if possible.
Minimize strenuous exercise: We recommend no strenuous exercise for 48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
Do not manipulate, massage, rub or poke the area. Do not massage or manipulate the treated area which will be quite swollen after Kybella® injections. You may shower and wash your face with gentle cleanser.
Concealer can be used to cover up any bruises after injections. Use make-up, moisturizers, sunscreen and concealer the next day to cover up bruises.
Do not prematurely evaluate results. The first few days after your treatment the treated area will be swollen; it will take weeks for results to become noticeable. We recommend not evaluating results until completing your course of treatment.
Take Tylenol for pain: It is normal to experience some pain and sensitivity in the area of the injections. Most patients find that Tylenol can help relieve this post-injection pain. Avoid NSAIDs such as Motrin and ibuprofen as these can make swelling and bruising worse.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Bruising. Bruises may last 1-2 weeks. Bruises can show up several days after the treatment.
Swelling, Inflammation and Redness. Swelling will be the worst the first two days and is mostly due to localized inflammation. Initial swelling can take up to 1- 2 weeks to settle. Sleeping propped up and icing can minimize this side effect. Avoid exercise first 48 hours or longer as swelling increases when working out.
Localized “firmness” or numbness under the skin rarely occurs and is temporary. As the fat starts to melt it can feel firm. Dr. Mueller will advise you when to start massaging the areas if needed to facilitate them dissolving quicker.
